Words. Words. Words. This blog is about words. There are so many out there. Can you count them all? No you can't because there are just so many out there. Who invented words? Why can't I invent a word. You know what I'm going to. Gloombile. The definition of Gloombile is the process of being gloomy while being in an automobile. Don't worry ladies and gentleman, this word will catch on. So the next time your acting all gloomy while in an automobile, use the word gloombile.
When were words invented and by who? I want the responsibility of inventing words. So, from now on, I own the title of "Justin Schultz: Word Maker." I will not be responding to the name Justin anymore. It's Word Maker.

Hmm. So let me get this straight: the infinitive is "to gloombile"? Would the sentence "I gloombiled the long way home from Chicago." be an accurate usage? If you want to invent words, you have to provide the context in which the word would be used. Dictionaries attempt this for even long-standing and popular words.
ReplyDeleteYour word is certainly useful (at least to my experience), and I see no reason why it shouldn't gain some "speakers."
"Wordsmith" is already taken, so I think there's no problem with "Word Maker" by extension, though you do certainly do not have exclusive rights to the title. Also, I think that "Word-Wright" would be classier.
Anyone can invent words and use them in every day language. The question is whether that word will be USED by the masses enough to become incorporated into society.
ReplyDeleteTake a look at the word "google" for instance. "to google" became a verb only after being used by the entire WORLD for a number of years. Many words are like that.
Just wait. Use enough words that you make up and eventually someone will catch on. You may have a word out there some day that you made up if you keep after it...
Oh lord! You have to be the most ridiculous person in this class Justin :) Gloombile? Really? Is that the word you came up with? I don't think you deserve the name "Word Maker" just yet grasshopper. Give it time...
